Dr Sam Martin

Hip & Knee Orthopaedic Surgeon MBBS, FRACS, FA Orth A

Dr Sam Martin is a specialist hip and knee orthopaedic surgeon providing personalised, evidence-based care to patients across regional NSW. Known for his approachable manner and commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes, Dr Martin combines advanced surgical techniques with thoughtful communication to guide patients through every step of their treatment journey.

A patient-first approach to orthopaedic care

Dr Martin believes that excellent orthopaedic care starts with understanding. He takes the time to listen closely to each patient, ensuring their concerns are heard and their questions answered in plain language. Treatment decisions are made together, with a focus on what is most appropriate for the individual, not just what is surgically possible.

While he is highly experienced in joint replacement surgery, Dr Martin also considers non-surgical options where appropriate, aiming to minimise intervention while maximising quality of life.

A focus on comfort, safety, and outcomes

For patients who do require surgery, Dr Martin places great emphasis on minimising post-operative discomfort and supporting a smooth recovery. He believes that joint replacement surgery should not be an experience defined by pain. By using evidence-based techniques and modern surgical planning tools, he aims to restore comfort, mobility, and confidence in the most effective and compassionate way possible.

Professional Background

Dr Martin completed his medical degree with Honours at the University of Tasmania in 2000, followed by orthopaedic training in Queensland. He became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and the Australian Orthopaedic Association (FAOrthA) in 2010.

To further refine his expertise, he undertook subspecialty fellowship training in hip and knee surgery in Europe. Since 2012, he has been based in Grafton, where he continues to care for patients across the Mid North Coast, Northern NSW, and beyond.

“One of the things I love about operating is mastering a particular procedure. When I can truly get into the zone and provide the best possible care, I know that if it were my wife, mum, dad, brother, sister, or child on that operating table, I’d want them to have the best surgeon they possibly could. That level of subspecialist care is crucial because I believe it gives my patients the best results."

Commitment to Excellence in Orthopaedic Care

Dr Martin’s dedication to excellence goes beyond the surgical theatre. He remains actively involved in research, collaboration, and continuous improvement to ensure his patients benefit from the most up-to-date, evidence-based care available. He draws on trusted resources such as the National Joint Replacement Registry to guide surgical decision-making and improve long-term outcomes.

Since 2011, Dr Martin has held a public appointment at Grafton Base Hospital, contributing to the local healthcare system while also mentoring and supporting fellow surgeons. He regularly welcomes visiting surgeons to observe his techniques and exchange insights, helping to raise the standard of orthopaedic care more broadly.

Dr Martin also performs surgery at Baringa Private Hospital, where patients can access high-quality care in a modern, well-equipped environment.

Patients under Dr Martin’s care can expect a thoughtful, evidence-based approach that prioritises both safety and long-term function.
